To Our Loyal Fans -
In anticipation of our upcoming 50th Anniversary, Strat-O-Matic has decided to put select seasons of each sport on sale from our extensive catalog. To do this, we had the one-and-only Hal Richman (creator of the games and founder of the company) select his favorite teams for all of you to enjoy. Below is a message from Hal concerning the seasons he has chosen:
As you probably all know, baseball was my first sports love. As a youngster, I was a fanatical Yankee fan. My hero was Joe DiMaggio. DiMaggio could do no wrong on the playing field. He had the entire package: a tremendous hitter, amazing fielder with an excellent arm (prior to World War II) and a graceful runner. On the other hand, the man I feared the most was the Ted Williams of the Red Sox. Frankly, I could not watch him hit against the Yankees. He could do it all with the bat. Also, Strat-O-Matic has a connection to Bob Feller, the great Indian’s right-hander. In 1981, the All-Star Game was cancelled due to the players’ strike. However, an all-star game was played, using Strat-O-Matic player cards at home plate in Municipal Stadium. James Williams travelled to Cleveland, assuming an umpire’s role for this unique all-star game confrontation. One of the participants was Bob Feller. DiMaggio, Williams and Feller all performed mightily in the 1941 season – Williams hit .406, Feller won 25 games and Joltin’ Joe batted .357 and of course hit in 57 straight games. What could be better! This was a season that I was too young to appreciate at the time, but I still consider it to be among my favorite seasons.

Concerning professional football, the 2007 season teemed with excitement and tension when the Giants played the undefeated Patriots twice, giving them a fight in the regular season and then upsetting them in the Super Bowl. Who would expect the Giants to pull off an upsets against one of the greatest teams in NFL history? I certainly did not. For the Patriot fans, it was a great disappointment as they had hoped that their Pats would equal the 1972 Miami team record. For Giant fans, it was something to savor for the rest of their lives.

In my later years, NBA basketball replaced baseball as my favorite sport. As a Knick fan, the Reed, Frazier, Bradley, Debusschere and Monroe teams were exciting to watch but the most enthralling event was the 1993-94 Houston-New York NBA championship finals. Why? A major bet with my brother-in law (a Houston resident) concerning the outcome of this epic series. The prize? The winner would purchase his team’s t-shirt that would be worn for one year by the loser. So, I wore a Rocket shirt for one year. I will never forget John Starks missing easy shots at the end of the game. And, of course, the Ewing-Olajuwon matchup.

Sincerely,
Hal Richman
Creator of Strat-O-Matic
Note: Mr. Richman has never been a major hockey fan, but the hockey experts at Strat-O-Matic have picked the 2000-2001 season as one of the best in recent hockey history. This season included the unbelievable return of Mario Lemieux, who managed to finish 26th in scoring and with the highest points-per-game average in the league, despite playing only 43 games. This year also featured Ray Bourque, the high-scoring defenseman who spent most of his career with Boston, finally hoisting the Stanley Cup with Colorado in the final game of his NHL career. A season full of drama and history, 2000-01 is certainly worthy of being considered a favorite here at Strat-O-Matic.
