- Stars: Scorers Howe, Richard, Lindsay, Geoffrion; goalies Lumley, Sawchuk, Rollins
For the sixth straight season, the star-studded Detroit Red Wings were the best team in the regular season, and for the third time in that span, they won the Stanley Cup. Deep everywhere, the Wings had goalie Terry Sawchuk (12 shutous, 1.92 GAA), scoring leader Gordie Howe (33-48-81), the No. 3 scorer in Ted Lindsay and the league’s first Norris Trophy winner, Red Kelly, who was sixth in league scoring in an era before offensive-minded defensemen were common … The main competition came from Montreal, who placed Rocket Richard, Boom-Boom Geoffrion, Bert Olmstead and Ken Mosdell in the top 10 scorers and had sensational rookie Jean Beliveau … Legendary coach King Clancy began his career as leader of Toronto and had the league’s best goalie, Harry Lumley (13 shutouts, 1.91 GAA) … However, the league MVP went to the goalie of the league’s worst team, Al Rollins of Chicago, who was all that kept the Blackhawks in most games.
