Pro Football Seasons
1966 Football Season Roster
- Respect authority: Packers trounce Chiefs in first Super Bowl
- Brown out: Kelly replaces Brown with 2,000 yards, 16 TDs
- The South rises: Atlanta joins the NFL, Miami the AFL
In the first Super Bowl, the Lombardi-dynasty Packers (12-2) took on Kansas City, at 11-2-1 the class of the AFL. No contest: 35-10, Green Bay. The Pack had more trouble with a young and dangerous Dallas team (10-3-1). Down 7, the Cowboys had the ball at Green Bay’s 2, but Don Meredith’s desperation pass with 28 seconds left was intercepted in the end zone. Other teams on the rise: George Allen’s Rams (8-6) with their Fearsome Foursome DL, and Oakland (8-5-1) in the AFL. In Cleveland (9-5), Jim Brown retired suddenly in his prime, but LeRoy Kelly ran for 1,141 yards and 15 TDs and added 873 more yards receiving and returning kicks.
