Strat-O-Matic reaches across the Pacific to represent professional baseball in its best Japanese form, a historically significant season featuring tremendous pennant races in the Central League and Pacific League and awesome individual feats.
The most famous Japanese star of all, left-handed slugging 1B Sadaharu Oh, the Babe Ruth of Japanese ball and the man who has hit more professional home runs than anyone, won the Central League Triple Crown with a .331-29-120 performance. He and 3B Shigeo Nagashima led the most famous Japanese franchise, the Yomiuri Tokyo Giants – the New York Yankees of Japanese baseball – to the last in their run of nine consecutive championship Victories in the Nippon Series (the Japanese World Series).
The Giants (84-76) barely edged the Hanshin Tigers (83-77) and Chunichi Dragons (82-78) for the best record in the Central League. Then the Giants had to defeat the Pacific League champ, the Nankai Hawks (86-74), which had won a best-of-five playoff against the Hankyu Braves (98-62). The Hawks had the Pacific League MVP, catcher Katsuya Nomura (.289-15-101).
You’ll find former Major Leaguers Joe Pepitone, Clete Boyer, Don Buford, George Altman, Willie Kirkland, Jim Lefebvre and 11 more in this set. Find out how they well they compete with these 18 members of the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame: Yutaka Fukumoto, Isao Harimoto, Osamu Higashio, Yoshinori Hirose, Tsuneo Horiuchi, Takao Kajimoto, Sachio Kinugasa, Masaaki Koyama, Choji Murata, Shigeo Nagashima, Katsuya Nomura, Sadaharu Oh, Katsuo Osugi, Keishi Suzuki, Morimichi Takagi, Hisashi Yamada, Koji Yamamoto, and Tetsuya Yoneda.
