1872 Baseball Season Roster

  • All the Beans: Boston Red Stockings win first of four straight championships
  • Breaking Ball: How Candy Cummings became famous for the curveball
  • Six for the Hall: Spalding, Cummings, Cap Anson, George Wright top the list

Relive baseball’s formative years. In the National Association’s second season, the Boston Red Stockings won the first of their four straight championships with a 39-8 record. Pitcher Al Spalding (38-8, 1.85) also hit .354 and Ross Barnes (.430) led the league in batting.  Future Hall of Famer George Wright hit .337.

The league had two more .400 hitters: Future Hall of Famer Cap Anson (.415) of Philadelphia and Davey Force (.418) of Baltimore. Baltimore also featured slugger Lip Pike (.298-7-60) and ERA leader Cherokee Fisher (1.80).

A rule change for the 1872 season allowed a pitcher to use his wrist as part of the delivery, provided that the hand was below his waist when the ball was released.  This enabled pitchers to use a sidearm delivery and increased the effectiveness of the curveball. New York’s Candy Cummings (33-20, 3.01) was the foremost practitioner.

The 1872 National Association produced six future Hall of Fame players — Anson, Cummings, Jim O’Rourke, Spalding, Deacon White, and Wright (BOS).
