1893 Baseball Season Roster

  • New mound distance increases offense, attendance
  • Boston Beaneaters win pennant with 3 of league’s 25 future Hall of Famers
  • Philly OFs Hamilton, Thompson and Delehanty are 1-2-3 in batting race

The pitching distance was increased to today’s 60 feet, 6 inches in response to low scoring and low attendance in 1892. Both went up dramatically this year, as the 12-team National League hit .280 and ERA soared to 4.66 in games that averaged 13.1 runs. The new infield-fly rule did not help the defense, either. Most of the league’s 25 future Hall of Famers starred in ’93, especially Philadelphia’s Ed Delehanty (.368-19-146), who would have won the Triple Crown if teammate outfielders Billy Hamilton (.380) and Sam Thompson (.370) had not hit for higher average. But Boston won with Hugh Duffy (.363, 118 RBI), Tommy McCarthy (.346, 111 RBIs, record 53 OF assists) and Kid Nichols (34-14, 3.52). Pittsburgh was loaded with stars and both outhit and out-pitched Boston.
