Mr. Hockey Gordie Howe topped the NHL in scoring and rookie goalie Terry Sawchuk set an NHL record with 44 wins. Three more future Hall of Famers – defenseman Red Kelly and Howe’s linemates Sid Abel and Ted Lindsay – were among the league’s top nine scorers. But Toronto could match Detroit’s defense.
