1969 Baseball Season Roster

  • Miracle Mets: Cubs, Braves, then mighty Orioles fall in turn to the former laughingstock
  • 4-Way Expansion: New teams in Kansas City, Montreal, San Diego, Seattle
  • The Greatest: Best seasons ever for Seaver, Rose, McCovey, Killebrew, Reggie Jackson, more

The largest expansion move ever brought four new teams and divisional play to the Major Leagues and unleashed mega-seasons for the game’s brightest stars and many others who would long be remembered for their performances this year. Tom Seaver (25-7, 2.21 ERA), Pete Rose (.348 BA, .512 slugging), Harmon Killebrew (49 HR, 140 RBI), Reggie Jackson (47 HR, 118 RBI), Willie McCovey (.320-46-126) all strengthened their Hall of Fame credentials. But Mike Cuellar also was 23-11, 2.38. Frank Howard hit .296-48-111. Rico Petrocelli hit 40 HR. Cleon Jones hit .340. Hank Aaron, Tony Perez, Juan Marichal, Phil Niekro, Bob Gibson, Rod Carew, Carl Yastrzemski and Ron Santo all had huge years. So did Rico Carty, Denny McLain, Mel Stottlemyre, Sam McDowell and Larry Dierker.

With the new teams in the cellar, teams were lifted, too. Baltimore’s impressive blend of pitching, power and defense, won 108 games. Atlanta and Minnesota won division titles. But no team soared more than the New York Mets. The team that had never finished better than ninth in the 10-team National League, won the new NL East by outlasting the Cubs, beat the Braves in the first NLCS, then shocked all in baseball by disposing of the heavily favored Orioles in just five World Series games. Seaver and Cleon Jones always will be remembered for their roles, and so will Tommy Agee, Ron Swoboda, Jerry Koosman, Tug McGraw, Don Clendenon and more.
