1969 Japanese League Baseball Season Roster

  • They Might Be Giants: MVP Oh, Nagashima dominate for champion Yomiuri
  • War in the Pacific: Hankyu wins the most, but narrowly edges Kintetsu
  • Black Mist Scandal: Players on nine teams implicated for throwing games; six banned for life

NOTE: Although the statistics cited in this blurb and on the SOM rosters are the actual Japanese statistics, the player cards are computed by using Major League equivalences.

For the fourth time in nine seasons, the Central League champion Yomiuri Giants won the Nippon Series, besting the Hankyu Braves of the Pacific League. Sluggers Sadaharu Oh (.345-44-103 with 111 walks) and Shigeo Nagashima (.311-32-115) led the Giants and the league in average, hits, home runs, RBI and runs. Teammate Tazumi Takahashi (22-5, 2.21, 221 Ks) led the league in wins victories and was voted the outstanding starting pitcher in Japanese baseball.

Hankyu, whose 76-50-4 record was better even than Yomiuri’s 73-51-6, won the Pacific by only two games over the Kintetsu Buffaloes. The Braves had Pacific MVP Atsushi Nagaike (.316-41-101 with 95 runs and 21 SB).

Gamers will recognize former Major Leaguers George Altman (21 HR), Don Blasingame, Jim Gentile, Willie Kirkland, Lee Thomas and nine others.

Many other stars had huge seasons. Play them all with as-played files, including the three All-Star games and the Nippon Series teams, with lineups. Actual Japanese-season player statistics have been adjusted for a season that can be played in stand-alone Japanese leagues or against contemporary Major League teams.
