Time travel to the first year of the NFL-AFL merger, when Baltimore moved into the new American Football Conference and dominated. With QBs John Unitas and Earl Morrall, the Colts scored an NFC-best 321 points. Bubba Smith, Ted Hendick and Mike Curtis starred for the AFC’s second-best defense. Then the 11-2-1 Colts knocked out Dallas in the Cowboys’ first of many Super Bowl appearances. These Cowboys had such all-time greats as WR Bob Hayes, DT Bob Lilly and LB Lee Roy Jordan. As good as the legendary Unitas was, pro football’s top passer was John Brodie of San Francisco, which had the top offense. As good as the Baltimore and Dallas defenses were, nobody compared to the 143-point D in Minnesota. QB Greg Landry, RB Mel Farr and TE Charlie Sanders revived Detroit. FB Larry Csonka and WR Paul Warfield set the stage for Miami’s dominance of the early 1970s.
