Philadelphia’s fighting Flyers were best prepared for the rugged competition this season. Dave Schultz’ record 472 penalty minutes set one tone. Reg Leach’s 45 goals and Bernie Parent’s league-best 2.03 GAA set others. Buffalo’s spectacular young French Connection line of Gilbert Perreault, Rick Martin and Rene Robert challenged. So did Montreal with brilliant Guy Lafleur (119 points) and Frank Mahovlich (117). LA with goaltender Rogie Vachon (2.24 GAA) and Boston with Phil Esposito (127 points) were good, too. Expansion Washington and Kansas City were not.
