The Pirates lost big but still had Garrett Jones, who again slugged 21 home runs, Andrew McCutchen continued his development by adding 16 and driving in 56 while Pedro Alvarez was introduced to the majors. Alvarez played 95 games while batting .256 with 16 home runs and 64 RBI. Nobody won more than nine games on the NL’s worst pitching staff, but Evan Meek put together an All-Star season out of the bullpen and Joel Hanrahan struck out 100 hitters in 69 2/3 innings.
