  • 90-72, NL West runner-up
  • A. Gonzalez: .298-31-101 … C. Headley: .264 … W. Venable: 29 SB
  • C. Richard: 14-9 … H. Bell: 1.93 ERA, 47 saves … M. Adams: 1.76 ERA

The Padres led the NL West for most of the season and then fell two games short. This surprise team was a contender with an offense that featured Adrian Gonzalez’s fourth season with at least 30 home runs and third with 100 RBI. The next-highest home run and RBI total belonged to Will Venable (13 home runs) and Chase Headley (58 RBI). Pitching was where the Padres shined as three starters won 14 games and three relievers posted ERAs of under two. Besides Richard, the Padres also featured Jon Garland (14-12, 3.47) and Mat Latos (14-10, 2.92). In the pen, the Padres also featured Joe Thatcher (1.29 ERA). That adds up to a pitching staff that ranked near the top of the league in most major categories.
