The Rays won the AL East for the second time in three years by edging the Yankees with one of the league’s top pitching staffs. David Price (188 Ks, 208 2/3 IP) anchored a staff that was second in ERA and strikeouts and first in saves. Rafael Soriano came over from the Braves and allowed just 36 hits in 62 1/3 innings. And don’t forget Matt Garza, whose career-high 15 wins and 204 2/3 innings included a no-hitter. On offense, the Rays led the league in walks and steals while scoring the third-most runs. Carlos Pena led six double-digit home run hitters while playing his usual standout defense at first base. All-Star Carl Crawford led the league with 13 triples and scored 110 runs. Evan Longoria was second in doubles while enjoying a career-best batting average.
