San Francisco (86-76): The defending World Series champs were only six games worse than in 2010, but were doomed  when star young catcher Buster Posey (.284) was lost for the season on May 25. Though the Giants pitched well again, with the major’s second-best ERA (3.20), it wasn’t enough to support the league’s worst offense (570 runs). Pablo Sandoval (.315-23-70) was the hitting exception. Ryan Vogelsong (2.71 ERA), Tim Lincecum (2.74), Matt Cain (2.88) were stalwart starters, backed up by a hard-throwing bullpen.
