Baseball Individual Teams
1954 New York (NL)
- World Series champions (97-57)
- W. Mays (.345-41-110, 13 3b), D. Mueller (.342)
- J. Antonelli (21-7, 2.29), R. Gomez (17-9, 2.88), H. Wilhelm (12-4, 2.11)
Willie Mays led the NL in batting and slugging. Johnny Antonelli led in ERA. The blend of offense (six men hit at least 15 HR) and pitching (six had strong winning records with low ERAs) won the pennant. Then, when New York added Dusty Rhodes (.341-15-50 in just 164 AB) to the lineup in the World Series, it swept 111-win Cleveland. That Series always will be remembered for Mays’ over-the-shoulder catch of Vic Wertz’ blast in deep center field at the Polo Grounds.
