Full Summary

The third American Basketball Association season gained in glamour and stature. Indiana won the first of its three ABA titles with a dominant 59-win season followed by a 12-3 playoff run led by Mel Daniels and Roger Brown. Leaving college after one year to bypass the NBA, Spencer Haywood led the ABA in scoring (30 ppg) and rebounding (19.5 rpg) to become the league’s MVP as a rookie. He helped Denver win the West at 51-33 … Rick Barry tried to jump back to the NBA, but remained in the ABA to lead the new Washington Capitols (last year, they were the title-winning Oakland Oaks). He and guard Bob Verga, the leading scorer for the new Carolina Cougars (the re-located Houston Mavericks) topped 27 ppg … The ABA wasn’t hurting for recognizable stars, with the likes of hot-shooting Louie Dampier, flashy scorer Warren Armstrong and a trio of ABA legends who got the Los Angeles Stars to the finals – Mack Calvin, Willie Wise and George Stone.
