College Football Seasons
2014 College Football Season Roster
- Buckeye Best: Ohio State wins the NCAA’s first four-team playoff
- Top Duck: 57-TD season elevates Mariota to Heisman, Oregon to title game
- Record Runners: Wisconsin’s Gordon, Oklahoma’s Perine race to 400-yard games
How will your replay of the NCAA’s first four-team playoff turn out? Can Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota, who passed for 42 touchdowns and ran for 15 more, really held Oregon decimate undefeated defending champion Florida State in the Rose Bowl semi-final? Can Ohio State, which needed three quarterbacks to finish the season, beat Alabama in the other semi-final, and then destroy Oregon in the championship game?
You can have a lot of fun until then playing the seasons of some of college football’s greatest running backs. Until 2014, only one top-division RB ever had run for 400 yards in a game. Within two weeks, both Melvin Gordon of Wisconsin (408 yards), then freshman Samaja Perine of Oklahoma (427) each set the NCAA record.
Gordon’s 2,587 rushing this year was second all-time, 41 shy of Barry Sanders’ record of 2,628 in 1988. Gordon also ran for 29 TDs … Elsewhere, Ameer Abdullah became No. 2 in career rushing yards for Nebraska. And at Georgia, true freshman Nick Chubb replaced injured Heisman candidate Todd Gurley and ran for more than 1,500 yards and 14 TDs, setting school bowl-game records.
Receivers flourished, too: Alabama’s Amari Cooper led the NCAA with 115 catches. Ohio State’s Devin Smith had 21 catches of 40+ yards, most in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
