Tampa Bay (90-72):

The Rays exceeded expectations because of their pitching, despite injuries that wiped out half the starting staff. Cy Young winner Nate Snell led MLB with 21 wins and the AL with a 1.89 ERA. Ryan Yarbrough broke the franchise rookie record with 16 wins. The Rays’ novel strategy of starting relievers briefly as “openers” paid off with Ryne Stanek (2.98 ERA), and closer Sergio Romo (25 saves), often followed by Yarbrough. The offense also came from unexpected sources: Free-agent C.J. Cron hit 30 HR. LF Tommy Pham arrived in a mid-season trade and hit .343. Rookie middle infieldersJoe Wendle (.300) and Willy Adames (.278, 10 HR in 85 games) impressed. OF Mallex Smith hit .296 and stole 40 bases.
