Pittsburgh (79-93): The Pirates were seven games better than in 2011, but their meltdown the last six weeks denied them their first winning record in two decades. Gold Glove CF Andrew McCutchen (.327-31-96, 20 SB, .953 OPS) was second in NL batting average and third in league MVP voting. He and 3B Pedro Alvarez became the third pair of Pittsburgh teammates to hit 30-plus HR. SP A.J. Burnett was the first Pirate to win 16 games since 1990. Joel Hanrahan became the first Pirate to save 30 in consecutive seasons. The pitching staff as a whole had more strikeouts than any Pirate team ever.
