Full Summary

As hard to fathom for current NHL fans at it may be, the 1966-67 NHL season was the 50th in the history of the league and the last to feature only six teams, as the following year would introduce an additional six new squads to the organization. Now, Strat-O-Matic brings back all the thrills of 1966-67 with the new six-team card set, a worthy addition to your Strat hockey card collection. This new set features the Chicago Black Hawks, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, and Toronto Maple Leafs – who would emerge as the champions of this historic season. See if your coaching skills can lead your team to a championship as you replay one of the most important years in hockey history.

Many fans look back at this season with fondness as it marked the debut of one of the biggest legends ever to take the ice: Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins, who in his debut game logged his first assist in a 6-2 victory over Detroit, and finished the season with 41 points. Orr would go on to win the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie for 1966-67, and went on to a career where he scored the highest points per game rate by a defenseman with 915 points in 657 games, and recorded six straight seasons with more than 100 points. He was a star from the moment he arrived, and now you can lead him through his unforgettable rookie season.

Although Chicago led the NHL with a stellar 41-17-12 record during the regular season, it would be third-place Toronto that would forge through the playoffs to win the Stanley Cup finals over arch-rival Montreal. Toronto was led by outstanding performances in the regular season by Dave Keon (52 points, and later was named MVP of the playoffs) and fine goaltending by Terry Sawchcuk and Johnny Bower.

You want legends? The 1966-67 season is chock full of them. Chicago dominated the NHL leaderboards with goalies Denis DeJordy (22-12-7, 2.46 GAA) and Glenn Hall (19-5-5, 2.38 GAA), who copped the Vezina Trophy; Stan Mikita, who enjoyed one of his best campaigns with 97 points and 62 goals en route to the Hart Memorial Trophy as well as the Art Ross and Lady Byng awards; and Bobby Hull of Chicago, who led the league with 52 goals. Ageless Gordie Howe of Detroit logged 65 points, while Norm Ullman of Detroit scored 70.
