Role reversals: This time Colorado had the best season record (107 points) and Detroit beat them on the way to the Stanley Cup finals, where the Wings swept an Eastern team (Philadelphia this time). In a year where defense was paramount – no team scored more than 285 times – Mario Lemieux scored 50 goals and 122 points in a farewell tour. New Jersey G Martin Brodeur was the best of a strong group with the lowest GAA (1.88) since ’72 and the most shutouts (10) since ’77.
