Full Summary

This 10-team league – offered as a Windows roster (no cards) playing a 144 game season – is a tale of two cities. New York was bursting with success. Manhattan’s Lincolns (87-57) had a fantastic season, joined in the top rank of clubs by Brooklyn’s Royals (82-62). The traveling Cubans (81-63) was a frequent visitor to Queens.

Chicago was a tale of change. Rube Foster had grown the American Giants (91-53) from the Chicago power play of 1910 to be the dominant king of Mid-West baseball. Four of the league’s 12 20-game winners plied their trade in New York City, with half working mostly from New York State: Brooklyn’s Dizzy Dismukes (29-8) and Howling Harvey (24-18), along with New York’s Smokey Joe Williams (28-7) and Lee Wade (20-18). The Cubans’ strength was in its pitching, fronted by Jose Junco (23-16) and Eustaquio Pedroso (23-14). Up the Hudson River, Schenectady’s (64-80) Frank Wickware (24-11) led the league in ERA at 1.61.

The Mid West showcased West Baden’s (78-66) Taylor brother Steel Arm Johnny (24-12) and Andrew (String Bean) Williams (20-15). Chicago’s Lightning Lindsay (22-9), French Lick’s (69-75) Henry McLaughlin (22-9), and St. Louis’ (69-75) Horace Jenkins (21- 12) each topped 20 wins.

Cuban’s Cristobal Torriente racked up an outstanding Triple Crown year (.367; tied with Brooklyn’s Zack Pettus at 12 HR; 89 RBI). There were 14 qualifiers topping .300 in a league that averaged .250. NY’s Spot Poles (.322) led in runs (116) and steals (61). West Baden’s speed team had runners-up (Rabbit Shively .319; 45 steals, and Specs Clark, 43 steals) in triples with 19, shared with NY’s John Henry (Pop) Lloyd (.320; 43 steals).

Hall of Famers Rube Foster, Pete Hill, Pop Lloyd, Jose Mendez, Louis Santop, Ben Taylor, Cristobal Torriente, and Smokey Joe Williams are joined by 11 others who are in the SOM’s Negro League Stars set.
