Full Summary

First, Strat-O-Matic created the most authentic set of Negro Leagues all-stars ever. Those 105 players were rated on career stats, fine-tuned for their equivalency to Major League stats. Now, you can play with such authentic Negro League teams as the legendary Kansas City Monarchs (89-55), Homestead Grays (88-56), Baltimore Elite Giants (84-60) and seven more Negro Leagues franchises, adjusted for a 144-game schedule and also adjusted for comparison to the big leagues.

This roster includes 17 members of the Baseball Hall of Fame: Cool Papa Bell, Ray Brown, Willard Brown, Roy Campanella, Ray Dandridge, Leon Day, Larry Doby, Josh Gibson, Monte Irvin, Buck Leonard, Biz Mackey, Satchel Paige, Spoony Palm, Hilton Smith, Mule Suttles, Willie Wells, Jud Wilson. And 19 more players who appear in the original SOM Negro Leagues set. Others, such as Sam Jethroe and Connie Johnson, had Major League futures. This time they are rated to play in a segregated 10-team league, or integrated with any of the Major League seasons of 1939-43.

Five years before the Major Leagues integrated with Jackie Robinson, Negro League players were not yet heavily recruited for World War II. So the Negro Leagues had most of its stars in top form at a time when MLB was depleted. Homestead’s slugging catcher Josh Gibson (.335-39-113, 1.125 OPS) is a Triple Crown candidate. Baltimore’s Roy Campanella and OF Wild Bill Wright (.313) led a strong lineup aided by 20-game winner Bill Byrd. Satchel Paige (20 wins, 2.12 ERA, 180 Ks), Hilton Smith (22 wins) and Connie Johnson gave Kansas City elite pitching, supported by five 1-rated fielders. Newark had Larry Doby and had such part-timers as Monte Irvin (1.056 OPS in 146 AB) and Mule Suttles (.967 OPS in 116 AB). Such stars as OF Willard Brown (.324-25-93) and 22-game winner Ray Brown bolster other teams.
