Full Summary

Legends were made in 1961: With Bart Starr and such other stars as Jimmy Taylor, Paul Hornung, Ray Nitschke, Willie Davis and Willie Wood, Vince Lombardi won the first of his five championships in Green Bay; Sonny Jurgensen replaced Hall of Fame quarterback Norm Van Brocklin in Philadelphia and launched his own Hall of Fame career with 32 touchdown passes; in the young American Football League, George Blanda threw for 36 TDs, Charlie Hennigan caught 92 passes for 1,766 yards and rushing leader RB Billy Cannon gained 2,043 all-purpose yards and scored 15 TDs.

That wasn’t all, not by a long shot: Cleveland’s Jimmy Brown ran for an NFL-best 1,408 yards and had more than 1,900 all-purpose yards. Sidekick HB Bobby Mitchell had 1,508 all-purpose yards and equaled Brown’s 10 TDs, including scores on punt and kickoff returns … Y.A. Tittle passed New York into the NFL title game and Jack Kemp did the same for San Diego in the AFL.
