50 Shades of MVP: 50 TD passes in first year as starter for KC QB Mahomes

Full Summary

The New England Patriots won their sixth Super Bowl with Bill Belichick as coach and Tom Brady as quarterback, overcoming a 13-3 LA Rams team with Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald (20.5 sacks) and the league’s top touchdown scorer, RB Todd Gurley (21, with 17 rushing).

The Rams and New Orleans Saints share the NFL’s best regular-season record and only a controversial non-call on pass interference got the Rams to Super Bowl instead of the Saints. Elsewhere, Chicago (12-4) went from worst to first in the NFC Central, while Kansas City and the LA Chargers had the AFC’s best marks at 12-4.

KC QB Patrick Mahomes, in his first season as a regular, threw 50 TD passes, many of them with eye-popping style. For a few minutes, KC’s Travis Kelce had the all-time mark for receiving yards by a tight end (1,336), until San Francisco’s George Kittle topped him with 1,377.

Dallas’ Ezekiel Elliott topped nine 1,000-yard rushers with 1,434. New Orleans’ Michael Thomas topped eleven 100-catch receivers with 125. Saints QB Drew Brees surpassed his own record for passing accuracy by completing 74.4% of his throws. Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers threw 597 passes with only 2 interceptions (0.3%).
