Full Summary

Relive baseball’s formative years. In the National Associations’ fourth season, the Boston Red Stockings won their third straight championship with a 52-18 record, with Al Spalding (52-16, 1.92) earning the win in each victory.  The Red Stockings batted .312 as a team and featured eight players who batted over .300—Cal McVey (.359, 123 hits, 71 RBI), Ross Barnes (.340), George Wright (.329, 15 triples), Spalding (.329), Harry Wright (.315), Jim O’Rourke (.314, 5 homeruns, 71 RBI), Andy Leonard (.313), and Deacon White (.301).

Among the other top performers, Chicago’s Levi Meyerly batted .394 to lead the league.  Lip Pike (Hartford, 355), Jack Manning (Baltimore and Hartford, .346), and John McMullin (Athletics, .346) were among the best hitters.  Bobby Mathews (New York) won 42 games and posted a 1.90 ERA.  Dick McBride pitched every inning for the Philadelphia Athletics, posting a 33-22 record and leading the league with a 1.64 ERA.

In a bizarre attempt to promote baseball, the Boston Red Stockings and Philadelphia Athletics, the top two teams, took an eight-week break from July 16 to Sept. 9 in order to play a series of exhibition games in England.  During this time, the New York Mutuals feasted on the less-talented teams in the league to pass Boston in number of victories.  As late as Oct. 9, Boston and New York had the same number of victories.  Boston won 13 of its final 16 games to lock up the pennant.

Hall of Fame Members—Cap Anson (PHS), Candy Cummings (PWS), Jim O’Rourke (BOS), Al Spalding (BOS), Deacon White (BOS), and George Wright (BOS).  Boston’s manager and centerfielder Harry Wright is also a member of the Hall of Fame, but he was selected for membership due to his ability as a manager.
