Full Summary

Here’s a unique opportunity to learn hard-to-research baseball history, Strat-O-style. The final season of the National Association, a quasi-professional league, gave way to the fully professional National League. The carryover included six of the 13 National Association teams represented here and eight future Major League Hall of Famers, including 1B Cap Anson (.325), pitcher Candy Cummings (35-12, 1.60) and SS George Wright (.333).

Recently inducted infielder Deacon White (.367) and Wright led the champion Boston Red Stockings, who were an amazing 71-8 and featured HOF-bound Al Spalding, who was an astonishing 54-5 with a 1.59 ERA. Ross Barnes (.364) and Cal McVey (.355, 87 RBI), and future HOFer Jim O’Rourke (.296-6-72) also starred for Boston, whose HOF manager Harry Wright came up with the innovation of relief pitching, using Spalding and Jack Manning to upset the timing of opposing batters.

The Hartford Dark Blues, with Cummings and Tommy Bond (19-16, 1.41) were 54-28 and the Philadelphia Athletics, with Anson and Ezra Sutton (.324) were 53-20. The lowly Brooklyn Atlantics lost 31 in a row on their way to a 2-42 record.
